Hell in a Cell
by Zac VanderLey
The PPV reviews that I do will be match by match ratings and an eventual rating of the entire PPV. Each match will be graded on the quality of moves, physicality, whether it was back and forth, exciting and if the ending was strong and satisfying. Each category will get a number grade and all of the numbers will be added up and divided to create the final show rating.
Jeff Hardy vs Randy Orton:
Moves: 9.3. Randy Orton landed a superplex, powerslam and used many foreign objects. Hardy landed a whisper in the wind and a swanton bomb on the chair. They pulled out all of the stops and executed every move. Every one would have loved to see an RKO when Hardy fell from the top of the cage, but overall the moves were well executed and interesting.
Physicality: 10, There are not many matches that are more physical than a Cell match. Hardy's belt was used, a screwdriver was placed in Hardy's ear and Hardy even fell from the top of the cell onto a table. Both the superstars went through physical hell and their bodies were proof of that.
Back and Forth: 8.6, The match was somewhat slow at times, but the superstars traded huge blows and it was back and forth. It was not a crush match and each superstar landed their fair share of moves.
Excitement: 9.1, The physicality of the match made it exciting. The screwdriver that was put through Jeff Hardy's ear raised the excitement through the roof. Even though the match was slow at times, the amount of devastating moves and objects used raised the excitement level.
Ending: 6.2, This was a strange ending. The rest of the match was strong, but the ending raised some eye brows. Orton did not land an RKO, but still picked up the victory. It made sense that Orton won, but the way that it happened was odd.
43.2/50= 86% Winner: Randy Orton
Charlotte Flair (c) vs Becky Lynch
Moves: 7.1, The only quality part of this match was that Charlotte executed some decent moves like a powerbomb, big boot and a boston crab. Becky Lynch's sole addition was a reversal of a spear.
Physicality: 5.5, Charlotte showed some power, but this match was no where near where it should have been. The biggest let down of Hell in a Cell.
Back and Forth: 6.2, It was kind of back and forth. Lynch would use an arm working hold and then Charlotte would use a move.
Excitement: 4.6, The fans were into it, but for all the wrong reasons and were cheering for the wrong superstar. Other than that this was a boring match to put it nicely.
Ending: 1.8, One of the worst endings of a match in recent WWE PPV history. The WWE is simply placating to the WWE Universe. There are so many things wrong with this rivalry and match.
25.2/50= 50% (failed) Winner: No one really, but Becky Lynch won the match
Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins vs Dolph Ziggler and Drew Mcintyre (c)
Moves: 9.7, These superstars always put on a show, but this match was amazing. There were so many strong moves used in creative ways. Seth Rollins and Dolph Ziggler used about every move in their arsenal and Mcintyre and Ambrose were right with them.
Physicality: 10, This was not a cell match, but these guys hit each other hard. This was a real fight and everyone took a beating. Later on these superstars brought the physicality up a notch.
Back and Forth: 10, There were so many moves and so many changes in momentum. This match had it all.
Excitement: 9.7, The fans were even into this match. The match got better and better and never lost the excitement.
Ending: 9.5, It was a creative and strong ending. This match was sensational.
48.9/50= 98% Winner: Ziggler and Mcintyre
Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles (c)
Moves: 9.2, AJ Styles has one of the largest move sets in all of WWE. Every PPV match that Styles wrestles in is filled with his vast array of moves. Samoa Joe also used some interesting moves, but we are still waiting to see the muscle buster.
Physicality: 9, Both of these superstars hit each other hard. It was not the most physical match of the night, but it was definitely a physical match.
Back and Forth: 9, This match was back and forth until the very end.
Excitement: 8.5, It was an exciting match but the fans did not really get into it. It was a better match than their previous championship match.
Ending: 8.7, At first the match seemed to end in a dumb way, but it set up this rivalry to go even deeper. No one likes to see a win by rollup, but it created controversy because Styles was tapping out as the ref counted to three.
44.4/50= 89% Winner: AJ Styles
Miz and Maryse vs Daniel Bryan and Nikki Bella
This match is hard to rate because there was not much wrestling action. Miz and Maryse ran around like they always do, and since Maryse cannot wrestle, the men did most of the wrestling. This match got back at the fans who are cheering obnoxiously for Becky Lynch. They are also big fans of Daniel Bryan, so it always brings me joy when Bryan loses, especially to the Miz. This match was not perfect, but it gets a perfect rating because Miz won and Bryan lost.
50/50= 100% Winner: Miz and Maryse
Alexa Bliss vs Ronda Rousey (c)
Moves: 8.5, Rousey used her variation of slams and her infamous armbar, while Bliss focused on Rousey's injured ribs. There were some good moves and they were executed well. This match was much better than their first and significantly better than the smackdown women's championship match.
Physicality: 8.3, Rousey always brings the physicality and strength that she is known for. Bliss was able to stay with Rousey for a bit, but is not the fighter that Rousey is.
Back and Forth: 7.5, Bliss was able to counter Rousey by focusing on Rousey's injured ribs which made this match way more entertaining than the crush match at Summerslam.
Excitement: 7.2, It was exciting at times, but not at the level of some of the Hell in a Cell matches.
Ending: 8, It was a solid ending to this rivalry. Bliss is not strong enough to wrestle Rousey, so it is smart to move on from this rivalry and let Rousey develop her character elsewhere.
39.5/50= 79% Winner: Ronda Rousey
Roman Reigns (c) vs Braun Stroman
Moves: 9.5, These men threw some haymakers at each other. Stroman chokeslammed Reigns on the apron and Reigns speared Stroman through a table. These wrestlers do not have a ton of moves, but they excel at power and strength.
Physicality: 10, The Big Dog and the Monster beat the hell out of each other and then Brock Lesnar came out and beat some more hell out of both of them. Ziggler and Rollins also fell of the top of the cage. This is one of the most physical matches of the night.
Back and Forth: 10, They each kicked out of some crazy moves and the match was not one sided.
Excitement: 10, If this match did not excite you, then I do not know what will. Lesnar returned and kicked his way into the cell. Rollins and Ziggler fell of the top of the cell, and Stroman and Reigns hammered each other.
Ending: 10, This was the best ending of the night. The rivalry continues and add in Brock Lesnar. No one saw Lesnar coming back and it was a great way to end the night.
49.5/50= 99% Winner: Technically no one, but Reigns retained his championship
Overall show rating: 300.7/350= 86%
The Becky Lynch and Charlotte match hurt this PPV's rating. All of the matches besides that were quality PPV matches filled with surprises and physical wrestling. It was definitely a solid and entertaining PPV overall.
